Redd Light Special
One right fine Tele-pickin' dude
Music Story  November 10, 2000, by Jerry Renshaw
"...Redd Volkaert has an honest-to-God '53 Telecaster, its scuffed neck and fingerboard bearing the well-worn patina of countless hours of play. Few pickers can do what he does; a cursory listen to Telewacker, Volkaert's 1998 Hightone release, makes that clear..."

Redd Volkaert No Stranger to a Tele (HighTone)
Music Review  April 13, 2001, by Jerry Renshaw
"...Redd Volkaert No Stranger to a Tele (HighTone) When Leo Fender dreamed up the Telecaster electric guitar back in '49 or so, it's doubtful he knew what uses it would be put to, especially in the hands of someone like Redd Volkaert. The local Telecaster master is all over the guitar like grease on a pork chop, quoting jazz, country, blues, and Western swing as effortlessly as turning on the lights in the living room..."

Redd Volkaert
Texas platters
Music Review  October 8, 2004, by Darcie Stevens
"...Redd VolkaertFor the Ladies (HighTone) Sometime after Bob Wills and Hank Williams taught the world to swing, things went to hell. The Toby Keiths and Kenny Chesneys of Hot 100 country ran that classic guitar sound through Disney's ad agency, and the diamonds turned to coal..."

Billy Dee
Record review
Music Review  July 29, 2005, by Margaret Moser
"...And good for Austin's Billy Dee, who plays country music the way it should be played. With a cast of all-star locals that includes Redd Volkaert, Tom Lewis, and Gary Claxton of Heybale!, plus pianist Floyd Domino, fiddler Jason Roberts, and pristine steel work from Ricky Davis, Dee's carved a niche with sharp-edged arrangements and a smooth but pure country groove ("Truly," "Too Much to Dream")..."

Music Column  July 27, 2001, by Ken Lieck
"...Oh wait, that describes most of the singer-songwriters in Austin!" In any case, Miller has moved back to Austin to attend grad school at UT, and is playing occasionally. Next up are gigs on August 4 at the Cactus opening for Terri Hendrix, and August 17 at Gaby and Mo's… I've been hearing good things about Redd Volkaert's 2-6pm Saturday afternoon "matinee" shows at the Continental Club (see the "Calendar" page), so if you're interested, you should check it out soon..."

Heybale Reviewed
Music Story  June 24, 2005, by Christopher Gray
"...2, 2003, edition of KUT's Live Set. Telecaster master Redd Volkaert effortlessly slips inside Lefty Frizzell's skin for "Always Late (With Your Kisses)" and Merle Haggard's for "The Longer You Wait." Steinway sage Earl Poole Ball has no trouble crooning Harlan Howard's sorrowful "She Called Me Baby" or leading a frisky rockabilly romp through Chuck Berry's "Promised Land." Gary Claxton sounds like a million bucks on barroom standard "Wine Me Up" and Mel Tillis' pointed "Mental Revenge." Bassist Kevin Smith and drummer Tom Lewis even get in a few licks of their own on Bob Wills' "Home in San Antone." Most poignant is guest steelmeister Jim Murphy's picturesque "Mignight in Amarillo"; Murphy passed away earlier this year, and Live From 1-A is dedicated to his memory..."

Junior Brown, Heybale: Continental Club, August 20
Music Review  September 1, 2000, by Jerry Renshaw
"...His flamboyant wild-man style is the band's signature, and it's what people pay money to hear. Heybale's Redd Volkaert, on the other hand, is an equally splendid guitar talent, but with a more restrained style, the new local being the regular guitar player for Merle Haggard's band..."
