Every Day Is Dress-Up Day
Features Story  August 2, 2002, by Iana Witham
"...This past school year alone, I've been: Boy George (long-sleeved, Eighties-esque polka-dot shirt; green tie; torn, colored fabric strips braided into the end of my hair; a top hat; and the moment of truth: the make-up); Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas (braids, a dress I designed, covered in muted and pastel patches, white hose with hand-drawn stitches, black & white gathered stripy knee socks, and black high heels. I painted my exposed skin white and drew stitches with liquid eyeliner); Rosie the Riveter/Betty Crocker/Lucille Ball-type person (crisp black eyeliner and mascara and red lipstick, a spit curl, a navy blue bandana -- like Axl Rose's, but turned around so that the knot's facing the front); Cyndi Lauper (reversible Converse, fishnets, red petticoat, tulle over-skirt, fuchsia bodice, three different belts, tons of jewelry, my wide Mohawk dyed -- sides neon yellow and the middle orange -- and flipped over to one side, lots of hair spray, bright and colorful make-up); Robert Smith from the Cure and Siouxsie Sioux from Siouxsie & the Banshees (most of the clothes I have look like something they would wear) numerous times...."

HOG Wild
How a concrete wasteland has become a street-art wonderland called the HOPE Outdoor Gallery
Arts Story  June 19, 2014, by Bob Makela
"...But all that changed during SXSW in 2011, when the tired property known historically as "the Foundation" got a facelift. Thanks to a driven, former advertising pro named Andi Scull Cheatham and the help of some of her artist friends, the trash- and crap-littered lot morphed into the gloriously colorful, wonderfully chaotic HOPE Outdoor Gallery (aka the HOG), a privately owned, three-story community art project-turned-paint park that's been igniting lots of joy in lots of people – locals and tourists alike – ever since...."

How Not to Be an Artist
Advice on how to be an artist
Arts Story  March 19, 2015, by Adam Sultan
"...Jardine suggested April 15 to "begin building," I didn't think I had much to "build," other than lay carpet and install a laser machine somewhere. Meanwhile, I found a beaten lawn chair frame at an estate sale – $5! Perfect! – and bought some gold spray paint at Hobby Lobby..."

Light Rail, Green Politics, and much ado about the city's growing pains.
Columns  October 13, 2000
"...Fellow protester and anarchist Pavel Jasek agreed: "Look at what we have accomplished! It all shows that a few young idealists, armed with hundreds of cans of spray paint and some rocks, can truly change the world for the better." Taking a drag from his Marlboro Light cigarette, he dismissed claims that the aerosol in paint is bad for the environment. "Yes, perhaps there is some damage, and the architecture of Prague may be somewhat damaged now, but please, just think of the hungry children worldwide whose lives we've saved."..."

Exhibitionism
Arts Review  March 14, 1997
"...If you've been in the Austin area for long, you've seen their subjects: limestone ledges lining a stream, a shimmery Barton Creek babbling over large, jagged boulders. The paintings are like windows that look out onto tranquil rural settings, except not all the works are totally rural..."

The Shape of Things
Neil LaBute's 'The Shape of Things,' staged by a chick and a dude productions, destroys the kind of cutesy relationships usually reserved for melodramatic chick flicks
Arts Review  March 3, 2006, by Patti Hadad
"..."I loathe art that's not true," Evelyn, the MFA student, tells the undergrad Adam in the museum where he works as a security guard. She's just crossed the ropes around a sculpture of a nude intending to spray paint over an obstruction on its genitalia, like some art terrorist..."

"..."Looks like the tin man," chuckles the cop as he points to the ring of silver spray paint around Ruth's (Dern) nose and mouth and tries to rouse her from her inhalant-induced stupor. Ruth is an utter mess, a real fuckup; with her kids taken away from her, she finds herself pregnant again and in court for inhalant abuse..."

The Good Eye: Bringing Messy Back
Them other boys don't know how to craft ...
Columns  July 3, 2014, by Amy Gentry
"...Craft culture has always struck me as a double-edged paper cutter, even before the Supreme Court started handing gold stars to those who believe women exist solely to buy puffy paint and breed. If anything, the Hobby Lobby ruling underscored the ancient connection between craft culture and keepin' the womenfolk at home, their hands safely occupied above the belt..."
