Austin filmmaker Kat Candler explores the sins of the father in this dark drama starring Aaron Paul.
Film Review  June 27, 2014, by Steve Davis
"...The quietly affecting Hellion subtly references the pronouncement in Old Testament scripture about the intergenerational burden of acts of inequity: Fairly or unfairly, the sons shall bear the sins of their fathers. Here, a middle-class family living in the Gulf Coast suburbia south of Houston struggles to keep things together in the wake of the sudden loss of its wife and mother..."

Film Review  June 21, 2002, by Russell Smith
"...Its setting, for example, is a surprisingly believable rural Hawaiian town full of blue-collar folks who eke out subsistence livings catering to obnoxious mainland tourists. Among these locals are a pair of orphans, emotionally troubled grade-school hellion Lilo (Chase) and teenage sister Nani (Carrere), who are scraping dysfunctionally along in their decaying family home..."

Screens Column  June 10, 2011, by Kimberley Jones
"...In the meantime, there's other news from AFF HQ – namely that after 10 years of involvement, seven as the festival's film program director, the very savvy and dry-witted Kelly Williams is moving on. Well, not entirely: He'll be hanging around long enough to assist new Film Program Director Stephen Jannise with programming the Austin Screens and Comedy Vanguard sections of the festival, but Williams' intent is to focus on producing, including "Hellion," the new short by Kat Candler, which shoots next month (see for info and how to contribute)..."

Son of the Mask
Sequel has absolutely none of its predecessor’s manic charm.

Film Review  February 25, 2005, by Marc Savlov
"...Not to be outdone, Tim soon ends up with the hideous wooden thing on his own puss, which results in a newfound skill at his job and a nightmarish romantic evening with wife Tonya (Howard) that nets – wait for it! – a mask-borne offspring. Christened Alvey (Liam and Ryan Falconer), the pint-sized hellion takes his cues from Cartoon Network and, in particular, Chuck Jones’ far-superior short "One Froggy Evening." Did I mention Norse gods Odin (Hoskins) and Loki (Cumming, still apparently on his Spy Kids Fegan Floop-high) are also along for the ride and out to get their missing mask back? It’s somehow comforting to know that kids will come out of this film with a very, very rudimentary understanding of Norse mythology, but something tells me that’s not what they’ll recall in the long run..."
