"...It is hard to believe our beloved music venue and nightclub Emo's has been a part of what makes this city so unconventional and eccentric for two decades now. Sure enough, this month will mark the club's 20th anniversary, and to celebrate, Emo's has prepared a party-perfect lineup featuring Neon Indian, Atmosphere, and Hot Water Music...."
"...The second game of the week was Emo's vs. Waterloo Records..."
"...[video-1] What started off as a practical joke nearly cost Emo's the game, as one fan from the stands thought it would be funny to turn off the lights to the field. However, a half hour and $40 later, the lights were back on and so was KOOP (2-6) vs..."
"...As reported in “Off the Record” this week (see the “Blood on Our Hands” item), a Death From Above 1979 ACL Music Fest afterparty outside at Emo's last Saturday, Sept. 17, became a hastily announced final show on the stage Johnny Cash famously graced during South by Southwest in 1994..."
"...On Tuesday, July 29, we played our second league game vs. Emo's..."
"...Austin hasn't gone this agog for a live revue by the subjects of a documentary since the madcap cast of Titicut Follies barnstormed the Vulcan Gas Company, but the red-hot juggernaut the Comedians of Comedy tour (and the Michael Blieden-directed tour film) is a veritable stand-upalooza of today's freshest comedic voices. The Chronicle recently caught up with tour mastermind and headliner Patton Oswalt in advance of his Emo's appearance with tour mates Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, Zach Galifianakis, and special guest Eugene Mirman...."
"...Perhaps more bronchial than mercurial, Neil Hamburger is nonetheless a vestige of stand-up's salad days, when funnymen traveled afar at great personal sacrifice to take their acts wherever a laugh was needed. No dog track or pizza parlor stage is too small for comedian Neil Hamburger, who returns to headline Emo's this Friday...."
"...By the time its 39th anniversary rolled around on July 15, the Chronicle, whose bond with Clifford and his sister Susan Antone could only be characterized as instantly familial, had investigated the matter thoroughly enough to know there would be no party because there wasn't a home for it or, for that matter, a proper set of hosts to throw it. New ownership of Antone's, which had taken over from former Emo's baron Frank Hendrix, had stalled out on the reopening without explanation or update...."
"...Down the block at Emo's front room on this muggy Thursday night, there's zero line for a solo act named Beck – currently blowing up with a freak hit about being a loser. His opening act downstairs on the club's big stage? Some down-on-his-luck country singer that hard rock and hip-hop süper producer Rick Rubin is helping: Johnny Cash...."
"...Visceral is one way to describe the Sword's live shows, which have become a lesson in the primitive. Over the last year, packed shows at Emo's and Room 710 have made the battle scars of Cronise's lyrics seem real..."
"...Mere weeks after celebrating its 35th anniversary, Antone's has partnered with Emo's owner Frank Hendrix. Contrary to my previous report, Susan Antone will remain a part owner of the venue, while Hendrix will handle daily operations and assist with booking duties...."
"...Music to do drugs to is nothing new, there are a million examples of that, from trance to psychedelic rock to ambient soundscapes. (Let me use this time to recommend the big Fennesz show coming up at Emo's, Sept..."
"...Levitation Fest dropped its lineup today, including shows headlined by Electric Wizard, Slowdive, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Angels, and Ministry. The psych event, running April 26-29 at Red River venues plus Emo's, rebuilds after weather canceled the 2016 iteration and they took this year off..."
"...A musical je ne sais quoi settled over Austin on Friday. As French electronic giants M83 bumped a sold-out audience at Stubb's, their countryman Yann Tiersen played to a considerably smaller gathering on East Riverside Drive at Emo's...."
"...GAY PLACE BOTTOMS 1) THE BASTROP FIRES 2) THURSTON MOORE AND KIM GORDON'S DIVORCE Not a kool thing. 3) JOSH ON PROJECT RUNWAY If you're tired, take a nap in an incinerater. 4) GOODBYE AMY WINEHOUSE You're wearing fuck-me pumps in heaven now. 5) KIM KARDASHIAN'S WEDDING 6) GOODBYE EMO'S Home of my first Austin show (Fujiya & Miyagi) and favorite show of 2011 (YACHT). Gone, but not forgotten. 7) REPUBLICAN DEBATES You say the cream rises to the top, I say shit floats. 8) THE WALKING DEAD I thought they'd never leave that farm! 9) JERRY SANDUSKY 10) GULNARE FREEWILL BAPTIST CHRURCH 11) ALEC BALDWIN..."
"...Black Angels (Thu., Emo's) Austin's mind-bending psych troupe rides high on excellent new LP Death Song, but your music geek points double with forefatherly opening act, Roky Erickson, rekindling some 13th Floor Elevators...."
"...We don't need to start a riot." But the sentiment seemed to be very much on our side. Gang of Four play Emo's Wednesday, Oct..."
"...That's all not to mention venues such as Empire, Emo's, Barcelona, and half of Sixth Street. Or DJs eschewing electronic music in favor of classic cheese (Barbarella), party rocking (DJ Mel), Eighties funk revival (Austin Boogie Crew), good-time sure shots (the Get Down), archival 45s (Old Style DJs), cumbia bangers (Peligrosa), and more DJ nights than fit in print...."
"...This made "Playback" wonder what other venues can I show up to packing heat? Texas has no specific restriction barring guns from concerts, but it's a felony to carry at a business that derives 51% of revenue from alcohol sales. Looking up 51% businesses on TABC's database, I ruled out almost every music venue in town: Mohawk, Emo's, Moody Theater, Hole in the Wall, the Long Center – even the Broken Spoke! The only venues that didn't sell 51% booze and therefore could welcome guns were Stubb's, Threadgill's, and Strange Brew..."
"...For what seemed like the first time, UT frat members danced alongside Eastside hip-hop fans. And interestingly, Sorkin says that on a Monday night that Emo's was featuring L7, she saw a noticeable drop in attendance..."
"...We have not come to bury Caesar, but to praise him. After all, Emo's East now rises up from the side of the tracks where the majority of local live music venues will be forced to relocate as they're priced out of their locales west of I-35 in the coming decade..."
"...Hendrix, who also owns Emo's East, wouldn't comment on another deal in the works that would sell the punk brand to C3 Entertainment, but sources confirmed that such a transaction remains on the table. He did, however, offer this message about where his life's at currently: "Comfortable shoes, a firm bed, and a big-screen TV..."
"...That's what many forecasted when Emo's, the strip's famed cornerstone, exited the district in December (see "We Built This City," Feb. 3)..."
"...While queer-friendly hot spot Cheer Up Charlie's getting sold out of its East Sixth space in exchange for "dive bar" spin-off Wonderland dominated conversation throughout December, no move made more headlines than Antone's – twice. The blues joint's owner Frank Hendrix followed February's sale of Emo's to local promotions giant C3 Presents by displacing Austin's "Home of the Blues" from its Downtown location in March (for the incoming Infest) and setting up shop in the space previously occupied by the Beauty Ballroom on East Riverside..."
"...After five months away from the stage, Price is now holding court for no cover on Tuesdays, 8-10pm, at the Little Darlin' – a super South Austin bar with an XXL patio. Little Darlin' co-owner Mike Sanchez, who spent a decade tending bar at Emo's on Red River, says turnout for the song stylist's performances has been solid since beginning in April..."
"...This clear piece of petroleum product called Peek-a-Boo Bicycle Rodeo, which sports the talents of Stretford, Death Valley, Teen Titans, The 1-4-5s, Girl Robots, Kiki Debris, Audrey, Spoon, and Lord High Fixers, features mostly Austin bands singing about bicycles and all things wheely. Sounds like a good enough reason for a show with all of the above save for Spoon and the Lord High Fixers. KEPONE Emo's, Saturday 20 Okay, all you bottom-dwelling insects, Kepone is here to exterminate your worthless, crawling butts -- that's why they're named after an insecticide, after all..."
"...In many cases, these clubs were the closest thing to the vital party experience a band could find -- often with the little- or no-pay element intact as well. There's still venerable old Emo's, the new Red Eyed Fly, and the tiny Purgatory, but if we were to lose even one more of these live music venues, well, Austin would be a sorry place for the young, loud, and snotty yearning to breathe free...."
"...Grulke's prime beef is that the FD's involvement in SXSW seemed "inconsistent"; he sighs, adding that "It's really frustrating to have the rules change in the middle of the conference." Grulke refers to a number of situations, including one at Emo's where a patron apparently ripped down the club's load card (which states the venue's official capacity) and the department required they replace it the next day, and another at the Flamingo Cantina where the club was reprimanded over a string of Christmas lights that had been up for years. SXSW security director Steve Chaney says that the encounters between the department and the clubs at the conference didn't have anything to do with capacity enforcement and notes that "This is the busiest week of the year in the `Live Music Capital of the World' and it seems they weren't taking that into consideration." Grulke further asks, "Why the letter of the law when the letter of the law isn't being enforced the rest of the year?"..."
"...If you bring some "cooked vittles," say the band, you can "get in for free, eat all you can, and throw the rest"... Out now from local Pinche Gringo Records is a new CD from Houston band the Suspects. They'll be playing at Emo's "Ska Fest" this Saturday....."
"...To me, besides talking trash or joining in the apathy, not too many people in music are making an effort. I just wanted to do something that would reflect our viewpoint." Just in time for summer! The shirts will be available at Attack Formation shows (like tomorrow's at Emo's), and if you want to reach out and touch someone, hit up firstname.lastname@example.org...."
"...With Emo's Red River digs closing Friday – coming to tomorrow's Chronicle – Momo's suddenly posted to Facebook today: “Our doors closed permanently as of yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 27, until we find a new location.” Renovations on a space Momo's doesn't own appears to be the culprit...."
"...Maybe you wanted to learn, but you eschew the country (and Western) philosophy that says if you can't dance, you can't play. Well, you're in Austin now, where Don Walser and the Pure Texas Band can book a gig at Emo's as easily as at the Broken Spoke..."
"...Last year's sets at La Zona Rosa were pretty special, as a still weak but enthusiastic McMahon re-connected with an audience glad to see him still alive. Now it's year 3, and yesterday's barnstorming, and teen-girl-swoon-inducing, set at Emo's was straight-forward rock-out fun...."
