A cancer survivor preaches the gospel of Daily Greens

Ever since I did my juice fast (see "The 10-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge," Feb. 3, 2012), I've been an avid fresh-pressed veggie juice drinker, making my own blends every week. On a recent trip to Central Market, I discovered a pretty good on-the-go alternative in Daily Greens ( Shauna Martin, a breast cancer survivor of eight years who attributes her recovery to her daily consumption of green juice, heads this Austin-based company. A successful attorney by day, Martin spent her free time perfecting and bottling her formulas to sell at local farmers' markets. Today, her raw, cold-pressed juice blends are available year-round at Whole Foods, Central Market, Natural Grocers, In.gredients, and Wheatsville Co-op, among many other specialty grocery stores across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. 

Each bottle has nine servings of raw fruit and vegetables (culled from six pounds of produce), seasonally sourced from area farmers and organic when possible. According to Martin, her recipes have higher electrolyte and lower caloric and sugar content than most other juiced drinks on the market. Using an HPP cold-pasteurizing technique, the drinks have a longer shelf life and five times the amount of nutrients than other products. I really like Vitality, a blend of kale, cucumber, pineapple, jalapeño, cilantro, celery, and lime, with a welcome hint of Himalayan sea salt. I also enjoy Renew, a refreshing combination of watermelon, cucumber, lime, spinach, dandelion, pineapple, celery, mint, and sea salt. A third flavor, Elevate, is sold exclusively at Whole Foods and is a good entry-level option for non-regular green juice drinkers, thanks to its heavy pear content and Madagascar vanilla component. The newest additions to the line are Purity, with a much stronger green flavor featuring broccoli instead of fruit, and Harmony, a very tasty offering with a good balance of fruit (lemon, apple, pear) and veggies (kale, celery, fennel), with a little ginger for good measure. A portion of the sales of Daily Greens goes to Pink Ribbon Cowgirls, a breast cancer support group for young survivors of which Martin is co-founder. She plans to take Daily Greens to the national level in 2014, continuing on her mission to convert and heal as many people as possible.
