• Celebrate springtime at the annual Poteet Strawberry Festival (www.strawberryfestival.com) in the farming community on Texas Highway 16, south of San Antonio. Look for strawberry cakes, pies, shortcakes, ice cream, jam, and lemonade, along with food booths, live music, kids' activities, and plenty of fun. Keep an eye out for the Kansas City Barbecue Society Great American BBQ Tour bus that is making stops at 23 fairs and food festivals from coast to coast this spring. They will offer free barbecue demonstrations and cooking tips plus free samples and recipes galore! Friday-Sunday, April 11-13.
• Enjoy wine, food, and opera with a romantic Italian twist when Torre di Pietra (www.texashillcountrywine.com) throws a benefit party for the San Antonio Opera. Dinner will be prepared by Romano's Macaroni Grill, and entertainment will be provided by Beatriz Aguilar y Espana Viva Flamenco and tenors William Chapman, Donald Braswell, and Tim Birt from the San Antonio Opera. $100 per person. Make necessary reservations by calling 830/644-2829. Saturday, April 12; entertainment and wine begin at 5:30pm.
• Congratulate the Mays family of Sam's BBQ (2000 E. 12th, 478-0378) on 30 smokin' years of barbecue success at their 30th anniversary party this weekend. They'll be smoking the meats and providing live music – fans can bring their own beer to the party. Saturday, April 12, 1pm until the party is over.
