In the off-with-my-head department, a reader e-mailed to alert me to the fact that I'd overlooked a little jewel in a recent column on the Rosedale restaurant row. Loyal fans of Pacha (4618 Burnet Rd., 420-8758) appreciate the small, eclectic international blackboard menu and delectable coffee drinks. Now it's definitely on my list of places to check out. Someplace else I need to look into is Gigi's Java & Donuts (2400-B Hwy. 290 W., 858-1700). Friends in Dripping Springs tell me it's the happening joint out there these days... When I was out and about the other morning, I noticed the Stallion Grill (5201 Airport, 380-9433) is now serving weekday breakfast from 6:30 to 10am. The menu includes hearty country breakfast platters with country ham steak, chicken-fried steak, or pork chops with eggs, a biscuit, and a choice of grits or potatoes for $4.99; omelets for $4.99; as well as pancakes alone or with eggs, bacon, or sausage; biscuits and gravy; or just plain eggs. They're also still serving lunch from 11am to 3pm... The most exciting news we've heard in quite a while is a USDA bulletin announcing the distribution of $900,000 worth of grants to establish, expand, and promote farmers' markets around the country through the Farmers Market Promotion Program. The Sunset Valley Farmers Market is receiving a grant for $67,950 to "design a permanent market structure facility that incorporates conservation and environmentally sustainable principles in its architectural or design elements in order to enhance the efficiency, utility, and visual appeal of the market structure." Market founder Pamela Boyar tells us that once the facility is designed, it will be built on a parcel of land recently purchased by the city of Sunset Valley just north of the Toney Burger parking lot where the market sets up now. A pavilion, commercial kitchen, and amphitheatre are planned along with plenty of parking. The new facilities will be a genuine asset to the entire community... In anticipation of the debut of the 75th anniversary edition of The Joy of Cooking during the upcoming Texas Book Festival the last weekend in October, the festival and the new Whole Foods Culinary Center are sponsoring a contest for original recipes. "Entries will be judged on their creativity, presentation, and flavor, and how well they adhere to the Joy of Cooking style."
