Cookbook Lovers Are Invited to Shop!

Cuisines editor Virginia B. Wood gives the lowdown on the Westbank Community Library's upcoming cookbook sale.

Westbank Library patron Rusty Sawyer's lifelong passions for cooking, traveling, reading, and collecting cookbooks is about to pay off in a big way for the library she loved and supported. Mrs. Sawyer bequeathed her extensive cookbook collection of more than 1,500 volumes to the Westbank Library in 1999. A selection of the books will become part of the library's permanent collection and the rest are being offered for sale. The Friends of the Westbank Library invite all area cookbook lovers to come and peruse Mrs. Sawyer's wonderful and eclectic assortment of books.

Assistant library director Elaine Miller explained that the books were collected over half a century as Mrs. Sawyer traveled to over 50 foreign countries and most all U.S. states. Many of the books are well-loved and richly annotated, while others are in pristine condition. There are local, regional, ethnic, bilingual, and foreign cookbooks. The choices range from signed first editions to appliance cookbooks and everything in between.

The sale is scheduled for Monday, January 19, in hopes that cookbook lovers will spend some of the Martin Luther King holiday at the library. Those folks who want to get the first possible look at the collection are invited to attend the "Early Bird Sale" from 9-10am for a $10 donation. The sale opens to the public from 10am-1pm and admission is free. The Westbank Community Library is located at 1309 Westbank Drive.
