10 Things I'd Take to a Desert Island:

1. Anderson's coffee. Any of their dark roasts start the morning out nicely.

2. Plain croissants from Sweetish Hill Bakery, to dunk in the coffee.

3. Fredericksburg peaches, for the very incarnation of summer.

4. Cochinita Pibil from Fonda San Miguel. What dish could be finer for lunch on the beach?

5. Olives from Phoenicia Bakery, because they make great snacks.

6. Angus Beef ribeye steaks from Central Market -- make a royal dinner for one.

7. The cheese counter at Whole Foods -- because there's no reason not to indulge in that third-helping, triple-cream fromage. After all, this is a deserted island; who's counting calories?

8. A nice Chambertin. Wiggy's, the Grapevine Market, or the Austin Wine Merchant can all advise as to which one might be suitable for desert island living.

9. Brillat-Savarin's The Physiology of Taste -- For a bit of post-prandial food philosophy. Unfortunately bookstores in Austin don't have the good sense to stock it. Thankfully there's

10. Chorizo, potato, and nopal tacos from Juan in a Million, to battle the morning hangover that results from drinking an entire bottle of red wine alone. end story
