Bon Appetit, Y'all

Texas Book Festival organizers have scheduled an event especially for cookbook lovers this Saturday, November 6 from 6-8pm at the Shoreline Grill (98 San Jacinto). Guests can sample signature dishes and purchase signed cookbooks from well-known Texas chefs and national cookbook authors. On hand will be Dallas celebrity chef Stephan Pyles, author of New Tastes From Texas, the companion volume to the PBS show of the same name; David Garrido, author of Nuevo Tex-Mex, and Grady Spears, author of Cowboy in the Kitchen, with their mutual co-author, Chile Pepper magazine editor Robb Walsh; Jeff Blank and Jay Moore, the chefs who've self-published Cooking Fearlessly; Deborah Madison, author of the multiple-award winning Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone; Saveur magazine editor and Mediterranean cookbook author Colman Andrews. Call 320-5451 for party ticket information.

For those who can't make it to the cookbook soiree, there will be other opportunities to meet the authors during the festival weekend. Deborah Madison will sign copies of her cookbooks at the Tarrytown location of Texas French Bread (3112 Windsor, 478-8845) on Friday, November 5 from 4-6pm. On Saturday morning, November 6 at 11am, syndicated cookbook reviewer Peter Franklin will moderate a panel discussion, "Food, Glorious Food: Cookbooks," with authors Deborah Madison, Robb Walsh, Stephan Pyles, and Colman Andrews in Capitol Extension Room E2.010. Sunday morning at 11am, Dallas Morning News lifestyle editor Dottie Griffith will moderate a panel discussion, "Fire in the Kitchen!: Top Texas Chefs Dish It Out," featuring tales from participating chefs Garrido, Spears, Moore, and Blank in the same location.

More Organic Beef

Richard and Peggy Sechrist's TDA-certified organic beef is available at Homestead Healthy Foods (1313 W. Live Oak in Fredericksburg, 888/861-5670) along with food items created by other area organic producers such as Boggy Creek Farm's line of smoke-dried tomato products, Hairston Creek's preserves and Pure Luck's award-winning goat cheeses. At the moment, the only local outlet for Homestead Organic Beef is the Westlake Farmer's Market.

Fall crops are in full swing, and the folks at the Westlake Farmer's Market (4100 Westbank Dr.) want shoppers to know they'll be open from10am-1pm on Saturdays until Thanksgiving with more than 15 vendors, including Boggy Creek Farm with their great fall greens. Don't forget to check out the fall produce at the South Austin Farmer's Market (2910 S. Congress) every Saturday morning, the Wednesday Farmer's Market at Whole Foods downtown, and Austin's Historic Farmer's Market (6700 Burnet).

Felicidades

One of Austin's great local treasures, Fonda San Miguel (2330 W. North Loop, 459-4121), celebrates 25 years in business with an invitation-only anniversary bash on Monday, November 8. After the party, Fonda owner Tom Gilliland and exec chef Roberto Santibanez depart for the Napa Valley with cookbook authors Diana Kennedy and Maria Dolores Torrez Izabal to participate in the Flavors of Mexico symposium at the CIA Greystone campus.
