Uncorking Texas

Gov. George W. Bush declared October Texas Wine Month according to a proclamation read by Agricuture Secretary Susan Combs at a Celebrity Grape Stomp party held at Central Market on September 30. Over 300 wine lovers sampled Texas wines and food products on that balmy evening while celebrities, wine lovers, and kids alike stomped grapes with abandon. The Texas wine industry has certainly come a long way since the first vineyards were planted by Spanish monks nearly 400 years ago. These days, more than 20 Texas wineries produce award-winning wines and generate millions of dollars for the Texas economy.

The Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association (TWGGA) sponsors a variety of events to promote Texas wines during the year. TWGGA holds its annual meeting and conference this weekend here in Austin and the kick-off event for the Harvest Festival is an evening of food and wine. Uncorking Texas showcases the cuisine of Texas chefs paired with the wines of TWGGA members. Participating chefs include David Garrido of Jeffrey's, Fresh Planet, and Cippolina, Carmelo Mauro of Carmelo's in Austin and Houston, Kevin Durkin of the DoubleTree's Courtyard Cafe, and Steve Howard of the Navajo Grill in Fredericksburg. Before the event opens to the public, food and wine journalists have been invited to judge the chefs' presentations and select a winner based on quality of food and creativity in presenting foods that complement Texas wines. The Uncorking Texas public wine tasting is Friday, October 15 from 7-10pm at the DoubleTree Hotel (6505 N. I-35). Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the door.
