Food-o-File

Third Time Lucky

By Virginia B. Wood, July 2, 1999, Food

It's been almost a year since I've printed a restaurant's phone number incorrectly twice in a row. Hopefully, the patient folks at BBQ World Headquarters will get lucky the third time. Their phone number is 323-9112.

Katz's New Kreation

Never one to rest on his knishes, restaurant entrepreneur/nightclub owner/record label magnate Mark Katz has come up with an ingenious business promotion to celebrate his 20 years at 618 W. Sixth (476-DELI). Beginning July 15, patrons with a craving for Katz's chow can order anything from the New York-style deli menu 24 hours a day by contacting the Katz's Deli Web site at www.katzneverkloses.com. And who'd be available to deliver an overstuffed Reuben with a side of latkes, 24/7, you ask? American Yellow Checker Cabs, who else? With a gigantic delivery area (south to near the airport, west to Rollingwood, north to the Pond Springs-Jollyville area, and northeast almost to Pflugerville) and American Yellow Checker Cabs at the wheel, Katz's should see some traffic. The Web site will also feature the entire catalog of Katz's specialty items, including caps, mugs, pens, T-shirts, boxer shorts, and copies of CDs released on Katz's Bagel label, plus a monthly music calendar for Top of the Marc.

Stop and Smell the Lavender

After a visit to the fragrant lavender fields of Provence, Texas winery owners Richard and Bunny Becker returned to their Hill Country vineyard and planted three acres of lavender. They're celebrating the first harvest this month with the Becker Vineyards Lavender Festival July 10 and 11, Saturday, 10am-5pm, and Sunday, noon-5pm. The festival features field tours, demonstrations, and plants and lavender products for sale in the winery tasting room and at vendor booths. Luncheons featuring lavender in each course will be served both days at 1pm. Saturday's lunch will be prepared by Debbie Stein of the Cypress Grill in Kerrville, and Sunday's will be catered by chef Steve Howardof the Navajo Grill in Fredericksburg. The fest is free, but the luncheons are $35 per person and require reservations. Becker Vineyards is located three miles west of Stonewall off Hwy290 on Jenschke Lane (830/644-2681).

Summer Gardening Camp

Those hard-working gardening tots at Ronda's Montessori Garden (4300 Mt. Vernon, 707-8635) are producing seven varieties of blue ribbon-winning basils plus lemon grass and garlic chives at their summer organic gardening camp. The bounty of their certified organic crop is for sale at local Whole Foods and Sun Harvest grocery stores. Ronda Dizney's preschool organic gardening program is so well-respected that a PBS feature on the school is being used to train Montessori teachers at their headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bocaditos

Southwestern herb expert/author Lucinda Hutson is off to Washington, D.C., to present a lecture and buffet luncheon at the Smithsonian Institution on Saturday, July 10. Entertaining With Cooling Summer Foods will emphasize garnishing and artful food presentation and feature recipes from Hutson's works, The Herb Garden Cookbook (Gulf Publishing, $24.95 hard) and Tequila, Cooking With the Spirit of Mexico(TenSpeed Press, $16.95 hard).
