Vote to Save a Life

RECEIVED Fri., Oct. 4, 2024

Dear Editor,
During the vice presidential debate, JD Vance said that he worries about gun violence when he drops his kids at school. What he didn’t say is that once his kids are out of the car, he goes to work as a senator to do the bidding of the National Rifle Association.
The fact is that our kids could be safer in their schools today if Republicans would support an assault weapons ban, but they won’t. Until the Republican Party changes its “do nothing agenda” on guns, we can expect more of the same.
Or we can do something about it and vote Democrat on Nov. 5. We owe it to our children to work to end school shootings, and not to stop until we’ve solved the problem. In this election, your vote could save a life.

Let There Be Light!

RECEIVED Thu., Oct. 3, 2024

Dear Editor,
I play in an adult community band called Blowcomotion. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm in Shipe Park. (We won't meet on October 8.)
We practice under the main field light in Shipe Park. This light is at the north end of the big field in the park. It is mounted on a tall wooden utility pole near the footbridge over the creek, about halfway between Avenue F and Avenue G.
The light stopped working on July 9. It no longer comes on at sunset. The field in Shipe Park is dark after sunset. This is making it hard for my band to practice. It also creates difficulties for other park users.
One is supposed to report such problems to Austin 311. Our band members have done this repeatedly, to no avail. At 311, they say they will fix the light. Sometimes they say that it is already fixed. But it is never fixed.
So, as a last resort, I'm writing to The Austin Chronicle. How can we get someone to fix the main field light in Shipe Park? Does anyone have a solution?
Yours truly,
Amy Babich
