Austin's Aunt Jemima?

RECEIVED Fri., June 26, 2020

Dear Editor,
I was an Austin guy and a Chronicle contributor for 35 years before I fled to Mexico. For years, I've thought that the Stubbs brand was similar to other unfortunate ethnic brands like Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima, or Rastus, the character on Cream of Wheat. I had the pleasure of meeting Stubbs and eating his 'cue in the back of Antone's many times. Stubbs brand sold to McCormick for $100 million in 2015. McCormick is a Baltimore, Md., based company with $3.6 billion in annual sales. How much cash did Stubbs or his family see from that sale? Do they get any residuals from the use of Stubbs' image on the world's leading premium bar-b-que sauce brand? If there was and is a big payout to the Stubbs family, hooray. If not, Stubbs is Austin's Aunt Jemima ...
Saludos,
Bill Crawford
