A Day Without Fear

RECEIVED Thu., April 9, 2020

Dear Editor,
What I’m proposing may be unusual, or even unimaginable, but I believe it’s what the world needs now and you’re the only ones who can make it happen.
I propose that all journalists, media, and news teams grant us A Day Without Fear.
We find ourselves having to wade through terrifying headlines and statistics in our search for something positive, for signs of peace, for glimmers of hope, for stories of humanity and compassion. They are certainly out there, but if we’ve already been brought to our knees by the time we discover them, what effect is that having on our spirits?
I’m asking for one day of only messages of peace, humor, hope and healing. Only images of beauty, nature, and our magnificent ability to love. Please, get together and choose one day to give the world a gift. Let us know it’s coming so we have something beautiful to look forward to, something we can trust.
Celebrities are sending messages of great generosity and hope, often bringing us to tears. I’ve thought about this and have come to the conclusion that our tears fall because we’re starved for messages of love. I’m asking you to feed us, to feed humanity.
If you grant us this request, isn’t it possible that so much love would be sent out to the world that people who are sick would begin to heal, that people who are grieving would find comfort and those suffering from fear, uncertainty and isolation would be uplifted?
Think of this as more than a request or a call to action, but as a prayer. Please.
With gratitude,
Maggie San Miguel
