Creative Space Solution

RECEIVED Mon., March 11, 2019

Dear Editor,
Kenny Dorham's Backyard seems like an ideal spot to invest some of Austin's creative space bond money. This city-owned outdoor space has been underutilized for years, and it's a perfect central Eastside location. Every time I walk past it, my mind reels with possibilities. How about a state-of-the-art venue that also provides rehearsal and teaching space to young musicians? I think of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music as a nonprofit model – except that here we could take advantage of a much larger slice of real estate. Phenomenal summer music camps for school-aged children could be conducted in a large auditorium, along with smaller practice spaces for private or semiprivate lessons. I'd love to see Kenny Dorham memorialized with a bigger, grander vision that supports music education and community events for youth and adults, of all backgrounds and means, for generations to come.
