Ambassador of Austin Music

RECEIVED Mon., Aug. 28, 2017

Dear Editor,
This Saturday morning, just a few hours after Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast, Margaret Moser left this plane of existence ["Margaret Moser 1954-2017," Daily Music, Aug. 26]. Now I find myself writing about my memories of her, once again (I was one of the people who was misled by reports of her passing two days earlier), on the anniversary of the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who left us on this date in 1990.
Margaret and I were not close friends, but I knew her for a long time. I think I met her when I visited one of the first offices of the Chronicle, at the corner of 28th Street and Neches. I remember some of her music articles would lead to divisive debates by some of my close friends, but no one ever ignored them.
Many people have commented on how she could be, as Louis Black said, "a force of nature," and though I never really experienced that side of her, I could tell that it existed. Still, most of the time I found her to be nice, helpful, and warm.
I often ran into her when I was registering as a volunteer for SXSW. At times, she would go out of her way to help me sign up for enough hours to earn my Platinum Badge.
Regardless of whether you knew Margaret personally, or not, the most important thing to know about her is that she truly loved music, down to her very soul. Of all the music she loved, Austin music seemed to be the most important to her.
While there are many people that have unofficially represented Austin to the rest of the country, and the world, not one of them has done as much for the city as Margaret has. Say what you will about SRV, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson, Marcia Ball, Charlie Sexton, and others, none of them was as important to spreading the word about Austin music as Margaret Moser. I doubt that anyone will even come close.
So Austin, Texas, my former home of 26 years, is missing one of its greatest advocates. Margaret Moser's presence will definitely be missed. But she will always be remembered as the Ambassador of Austin Music.
I feel honored to have known her, even casually, and I treasure my memories of her. Rest in peace, dear Margaret.
“If I could do in my lifetime half of what she’s done, I’d be a happy person.” – Susan Antone
“Austin wouldn’t be Austin if it wasn’t for Margaret.” – Rosie Flores
