Consider the Environment

RECEIVED Tue., June 20, 2017

Dear Editor,
It is true that CodeNEXT is complicated ["Just the Beginning ...," News, June 16]. It pays little, if any, attention to the environmental impact of development in the city.
However, it does not take a new zoning code to negatively impact environmentally sensitive areas of Austin. Currently a developer, David Kahn, is planning to build an 11-story hotel along Bull Creek just west of Loop 360 in an environmentally sensitive area. Neither existing zoning regulations nor proposed changes under CodeNEXT provide adequate protection to critical environmental areas that provide the citizens of Austin with parkland, drinking water, and recreational opportunities.
Consider the impact of CodeNEXT on the environment and what makes Austin different from Orange County, California.
