Positive Action

RECEIVED Mon., April 17, 2017

Dear Editor,
Thanks to The Austin Chronicle for shining a spotlight on the transgender community's difficulties in accessing health care [“They Called Me 'It,'" News, April 14]. I agree that we must identify barriers to quality primary care and gaps in transgender health care education. That's why I filed House Bill 943, which would establish a Transgender Healthcare Advisory Committee to share best practices and make recommendations on how to improve access to health care for all transgender Texans.
This legislative session, it seems that discussions around the transgender community largely revolve around fear and misunderstanding, and are resulting in policy proposals that would discriminate against this population. HB 943, however, would take positive action to dispel some of that mystery and anxiety.
Rep. Donna Howard, Texas House District 48
