Dear Editor,
My immediate reaction to Amy Kamp's column ["
Notes on Kamp: Will Austin Ever Get Smart About Public Transportation?" News, April 22] was, “Yes, yes, let's do something and let's get started now.” Austin is a big city now and needs reliable public transportation that includes rail, buses, and maybe even street cars. We cannot continue to enlarge our roads to accommodate many, many more cars.
Anyone who has spent time in other major U.S. cities knows that good public transportation is essential. I support Mayor Steve Adler for his work in getting funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Smart City Challenge. We are about 25 years behind in planning for better public transportation in this beautiful, but very crowded capital city. Let's get everyone in all of Austin's neighborhoods on board with more and better public transportation.
