Simple Fairness

RECEIVED Mon., April 4, 2016

Dear Editor,
Companies such as Uber and Lyft provide a type of taxi service that is only available to smartphone users. Simple fairness dictates that they should have to abide by the same rules that traditional cab companies must follow. Any company that refuses to obey those rules should be told goodbye and good riddance. The ballot measure attempting to overrule Austin City Council's decision should have been postponed until November ["Texas Supremes Deny Uber," News, March 14]. The May election has no other high-profile races, and turnout will be low. Uber's supporters will be most likely to vote. Anyone who cares about consumer safety or equitable application of business regulations should also take the time to vote next month. There is no reason that Uber could not comply with the same fingerprinting and insurance requirements as other cab companies. Instead, they have demanded special treatment and threatened to leave if they don't get it.
