Fear for Safety

RECEIVED Mon., Nov. 9, 2015

Dear Editor,
Since moving to Austin in 2009 I have been a huge fan of the APD and always thought of the general vibe of APD as being fair, cool, calm and collected. After seeing the video of the jaywalking incident that occurred Downtown on Friday, Nov. 6, my general opinion has unfortunately shifted to one of fear. The unfortunate nationwide trend of aggressive and physical police tactics regardless of level of crime seems to have arrived in Austin. I am still having a hard time believing my eyes when I see clear closed-fist, fighter style punches being delivered to the jaywalker from the APD. Granted I do not know what occurred leading up to the event; regardless, does that warrant a punishment-style restraining tactic? Shouldn't the jaywalker simply have been stopped and given a simple fine? The APD looked like a gang making an attack in a movie.
Are we safe from local police in Austin?
