Dear Editor,
    Everyone is missing the point on the stealth dorm ordinance. The only purpose of this ordinance, as currently written, is to stop the demolition of existing housing stock in neighborhoods north of the UT campus until Code Next can be implemented. Code Next will likely include tools/provisions designed to facilitate the construction of small-scale multifamily housing, the only possible solution to Austin's upward spiraling housing costs. Meanwhile, everyone missed the big story of the evening, where five city council members voted to extended historic zoning on – wait for it – a surface parking lot about a block from the UT campus, thus blocking the construction of a 300-student apartment building which would have set aside 40 spaces for low-income students. Historic zoning on a surface parking lot in order to prevent the construction of affordable student housing close to campus. It doesn't get any dumber than this. We can only hope that these five individuals (Leffingwell, Martinez, Cole, Tovo, and Morrison) will soon be permanently removed from any kind of civic decision-making capacity.

Dear Editor,
    I heard only recently that Will Indian, a very fine Austin guitarist, had passed away. Since 1992, I have come over from the UK to your city to visit musician friends a number of times and, over the years, got to know him very well. I remember my first visit to Austin, where Will invited me up on stage to sing with his band the Rhythm Rats at the Flamingo Cantina on Sixth Street – me a total stranger with an English accent!
    As well as being a superb guitarist, he was a generous and funny guy. I have many fond memories of sitting on the deck at his home in Dripping Springs watching the sun go down, listening to Will play guitar and tell his many stories.
    His contribution to the Austin music scene is legendary, working with vast numbers of musicians and many fine bands including the Fur Trappers, the Rhythm Rats, the Nortons, and the James Hand Band.
    Rest in peace and harmony, Will. Those who had the pleasure of meeting you will, I am sure, find their lives less rich now that you've gone and yet will discover their futures greatly enriched by the memories of the valuable contributions you made to those you met in your lifetime.
