Yet, in the following paragraph, he falls victim to the same thought process by casually dismissing what he feels is yet another irksome constitutional "tax exemption" (his quotes) for veterans. State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte was right to strike back ["Senator Van de Putte 'Distressed' by Endorsement
," Postmarks, Oct. 21] at the Chronicle
's wrongheaded opposition to the tax exemption. While King and the Chronicle
's editorial board, or I as a veteran for that matter, may complain that our state is not doing enough, that's no reason to encourage others to defeat this particular benefit. Not every piece of legislation can be a grand bargain. Sometimes, you have to slog away until the reinforcements come. I thank Sen. Van de Putte for standing up for our veterans again.
