Kudos on New Police Policy

RECEIVED Sat., Sept. 29, 2012

Dear Editor,
Finally! Hats off to our police chief for putting in place a policing policy that recognizes that mentally disturbed people are in fact ill [Headlines, News, Sept. 28]. Would you stuff a dozen doughnuts down the throat of a diabetic? Not if you care about his welfare. Same deal with suspects who are mentally ill. As the slash-and-burn of social services continues in Texas, these specially trained police may be the only chance for help these folks have.

Job Security?

RECEIVED Fri., Sept. 28, 2012

Dear Editor,
Re: "The Life and Death of Schools: Diane Ravitch on the real threats to public education" [News, Sept. 28]: Message to four million public school teachers: You should not have to lose your job, no matter how miserable your performance individually or your district's performance collectively.
