Dear Editor, Rape is rape, except when it isn't. No, I do not think Congressman Todd Akin should continue his Senate race following his inaccurate and insensitive remarks. However, sex law language is inaccurate. Many, if not most, would not consider a 16-year-old girl a rape victim just because her boyfriend is 19. Yet, in Texas and other states, she was raped, and he is a sex offender. He is policed, monitored, and listed on the registry as if he jumped out of the bushes to attack her. This language confusion is a result of our sex confusion. Protecting everyone from rape and other violent acts is a highly important function of government, but laws of the land, more often than not, take good intentions too far. This is evident in laws regarding sexual conduct. Rape is rape, except when it isn't.
