Focus on Paxton Misses the Point

RECEIVED Fri., April 27, 2012

Dear Editor,
Michael King missed much of the point about the outrage over the shooting of Cisco [“The Cisco Story: More Than Meets the Social Media Eye,” News, April 27]. This article, “Cop Shoots Dog,” from The Huffington Post is well worth his read. The rage over the shooting of Cisco highlighted a national problem. Do a bit of Googling on "police dog shoot" and you'll be stunned at the number of hits you get. So let's not divert the attention away from the problem by focusing on Michael Paxton. Autistic children have had their therapy dogs shot and killed for heaven's sake … methinks, therefore, that the police protest too much.
And by the way, I don't drink, do drugs, smoke, or even park outside the lines at the shopping mall. I'm as straight an arrow as they come, but there is a problem here, and the police need to acknowledge it and do something about it. Otherwise, they deserve every bit of the blowback they get.
