Sell-Out Review

RECEIVED Sat., Oct. 23, 2010

Dear Editor,
Re: “The Man With Two Brains” [Music, Oct. 22]: So let me get this straight. You put the most DIY band in town [Ghostland Observatory] on the cover of the Chronicle, write an insightful article, and then trash the new record? Unbelievable! Somebody should say something, right?! Austin Powell’s review further demonstrates the lack of thought that pounds the music review circles of the Chronicle. He actually quotes a review of the previous record from Spin, but forgets to mention that he himself gave that same record a strong review upon its release. Check. He then proceeds to bring up a specific producer for the band to work with. What a sham! Come on! Seriously? What makes this band cool is that they do their own thing, create their own world, and hold their middle finger up to the shallow industry around them. It felt like a sell-out review. And for what? “Laughable.” Really? I guess it’s as laughable as when Beck says “I’m gonna break my face on the sweet sunshine” on Mellow Gold in a Darth Vader kind of way. I thought that shit was cool. You missed the beat and you let some rookie lead the charge. Get some balls and get behind something. Spin?! My god. Lester Bangs is rolling right now. What a fucking joke. Who’s running the show? And I don’t even like electronic music.
