Do We Really Need More Ordinances?

RECEIVED Fri., Nov. 6, 2009

Dear Editor,
Re: “Austin Needs a Spay/Neuter Ordinance” [“Postmarks” online, Nov. 6]: Do we really need more ordinances? More rules and regulations intended to regulate idiocracy inevitably constrain everyone. And who would this type of ordinance affect? Individuals or corporations? Corporate pet stores (Petco, PetSmart) contribute to animal overpopulation, and how many of these big-box pet stores are everywhere? Pumping out animals for profit. Breeding has become a way to earn extra income for some, a hobby for others. If any additional regulation is applied, it should be specific to breeders and corporate pet stores and the entities supplying the animals – not just the people receiving them.
