Dear Editor, Ordinary Americans are being shut out of the health care debate by powerful special interest lobbyists. Panicked by the possibility of meaningful health care reform, insurance and drug companies are spending more than $1 million every day to lobby for the status quo. Ordinary Americans cannot afford to pay members of Congress to listen to their concerns, yet we are the ones pinching pennies and being forced to choose between paying our mortgages or paying for our children’s health care bills. If we want to get health care costs under control and increase access to affordable, dependable coverage, we must make sure the voices of ordinary citizens are heard over the torrent of money being spent to promote the industry’s position. Congress must pass comprehensive health care reform this year. Let’s hope the special interests don’t get in the way.
