Thank you, Robert Faires and artists, for sharing your "first time" stories [“The First Time
,” the Arts, July 17]. I was struck by a common thread throughout – how serendipity (being in the right place at the right time), a mentor, or an encouraging, open-minded parent can play a critical role in one's willingness and/or ability to awaken to the knowledge that you are an artist. What a fabulous gift to have received. And then to have the courage to trust that information – what a gift to yourself. I hope these stories spark recognition for someone and that they too can find the courage to be who they're meant to be – what a gift to pass on.
