Republic Is Doomed

RECEIVED Tue., June 2, 2009

Dear Editor,
In Austin, it's not uncommon to frequently see police helicopters circling quadrants of the city. Or to witness chemicals being dumped into the atmosphere consistently throughout the day. Those who suffer from severe allergies and cedar fever are likely having an adverse reaction to the deliberate heavy metal deposits hanging in the air. It's impossible to watch television, listen to the radio, or exist in general without being assaulted by advertisements and commercials, commercials for advertisements, and vice versa. While traveling it's common to lose your sense of direction in the midst of countless big-box strip malls which make up the current landscape. For sale/for lease signs cover nearly every square inch of open space remaining. Massive structures are being built and left vacant, or worse, nearly vacant. Big-box stores and their corporate leaches leave behind empty structures to move across the highway. This disrespect for the land adversely affects the people and is a serious threat to human existence. Look around. Our existence is suffocating under corporate greed expressed through atrocious consumerism. It's nearly impossible to be autonomous within the ever-reaching tentacles of the federal government. Current times reflect a policed existence as we are tracked, monitored, and controlled during our lifetime by the government. The previous administration has paved the way for the current administration to extend federal reach. Soon we will no longer be a republic. We will exist as communists.
Change we can believe in,
Colette Michalec
