Why Do We Always Have to Hate?

RECEIVED Fri., Nov. 7, 2008

Dear Editor,
Hooray! We elected our first black president! Barack Obama is more than that. He is a talented, charismatic, and brilliant politician. While I believe we made the right choice, and am very thankful to finally get through this horrible issue of race, it seems now that since we don't hate African-Americans anymore, we have come out in droves to hate gay and lesbian Americans. I use the word "we" because while I am not a bigot, our country is, and I live in this country so I feel I must say "we." You ask yourself, "How can this guy say our country is bigoted when we just elected our first black president?" Well, I'll tell you, we just banned same-sex marriage in a number of states, including California, where it was legal and is now not legal. And in one of our "great" states it is now against the law for same-sex couples to adopt children. Single people can adopt, but if you're gay, don't even think about it! So you see, gays are the new blacks. I guess "we" have to always have someone to hate. Truth be told, those of you who elected these heavily bigoted ballot initiatives in these various states are scared of what you don't know! Read a book, get some culture, and stop making your whole country look like a bunch of haters! You got lucky by the rest of us electing Obama, but your prejudice will be addressed!
