Dear Editor, For city politicians to take money from the citizens (through the coercive process of taxation) to bribe national retailers to do business in Austin is a despicable use of the taxing process. By voting for Prop. 2, one can permanently terminate an inexcusable device that permits such spending excesses by Austin politicians. Voting yes will save an estimated $64 million in bribes that otherwise can be paid to the politically favored. Prior to being mayor, Will Wynn was a developer of large real estate projects. When he terms out as mayor, it may be reasonable to expect he will again be developing large real estate projects. Could Wynn’s opposition to Prop. 2 be because he is fighting to preserve this developer-bribing arrangement so that it (and the millions) will be there when he returns to his primary income activities? For Simon Property Group, largest mall developer in the United States, spending $250,000 on TV ads to protect the bribing mechanism is good business. Really good business – spend a quarter-million dollars and get $64 million. Stop the waste. Vote yes on Prop. 2.
