Disappointed With Prop. 2 Coverage

RECEIVED Thu., Oct. 30, 2008

Dear Editor,
Is Proposition 2 really a “no-brainer” [“'Chronicle' Endorsements,” News, Oct. 31]? Is it enough to “keep Austin's word”? I'm used to seeing dueling slogans in a political campaign, but the Chronicle, in its recent positions on Proposition 2, doesn't seem to have dug much deeper. The voters need someone to look closely at the claims of both sides and come up with a dispassionate conclusion. I was disappointed that the Chronicle didn't do that.
For another view – one that takes the arguments of both sides seriously – take a look at the ballot study conducted by Liveable City at www.liveablecity.org.
Reasonable people can disagree on Proposition 2 but only when their arguments are based on facts, not catchy phrases. That's the real “no-brainer.”
