Auto Insurance Shenanigans

RECEIVED Sun., Oct. 12, 2008

Dear Editor,
So a few months back, without any fanfare or notice, Texas auto insurance minimums went up statewide. This wasn't because the folks who paid for just liability were defaulting or were in danger of going into default or had committed any grievance whatsoever. The reason the minimums rose is because the insurance companies decided that the minimums should go up, and for the most part, the Texas Legislature is on the side of big business/insurance (and they didn't disagree). You see, apparently there are more cars on the road now that are worth more than the minimums set by the state of Texas than just a few years ago. Rather than taking the “risk” of owning a more expensive car, expensive-car owners have taken to talking to their legislators who (probably because they own similarly valued cars) agreed that Texas law should be changed to cover them. In short, because a few individuals own Incredibly Expensive Vehicles, everyone in the state is made to pay for it. Did you hear about this? Was there a referendum asking your opinion? Probably not. Why? Because you are not interested in it. So what is my solution? My opinion (I use this because Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly use it, and it protects them from liability) is that we should all go out and wreck into cars. Let's just crash into them – why not? To be crass, fuck the shit out of them. While I agree that your insurance rate may go up, I can promise you it will go up anyway. At least this way you get to have some fun.
