Dear Editor, I laughed when I heard the mayor proclaim October as National Community Planning Month. The Dawson Neighborhood Association and Dawson Neighborhood Planning Team, the first neighborhood plan approved by council nearly 10 years ago, is in a fight for its survival. Why bother? I’m calling this month to be National Community Planning Disbandment Month. Our community neighborhood plan has been voted against by the City Planning Commission at every session. City staff has recommended against the Dawson Neighborhood Planning Team at every turn. City Council is going down the middle, and none of the above seems to honor our basic, community neighborhood plan. But that’s nothing! What’s wrong in our community is the undermining of the Dawson neighborhood plan itself. Our total neighborhood community-plan amendment process is being ignored. Our community has voted repeatedly against commercialization on interior blocks, and our votes are being ignored. It’s time for all neighborhood planning teams to disband in honor of National Community Planning Disbandment Month.
