Thoughtful Response to Psychotic Jingoistic Letter

RECEIVED Fri., May 4, 2007

Dear Editor,
Re: In response to Vance McDonald's latest letter to the editor [“Postmarks” online, April 30]: On September 11, approximately 3,000 people were killed by al Qaeda. This was the desperate act of 20 desperate, crazy men. In response, the U.S. has bombed two countries into the Stone Age. What has this accomplished? There are now many more people in the Middle East willing to be terrorists. The ranks of al Qaeda, rather than diminish, have swelled to a point that civil war in Iraq may be inevitable. This isn't because there were "millions of devotees committed to the annihilation of all free people and enslaving the world." A large proportion of the Middle East sees the U.S. as an occupying force and is willing to fight to keep us out and our hands off of their resources. If we really wanted to fight terrorism, we as Americans would commit to an alternative energy strategy, one that would not support worldwide terrorism. Take the money away. That is the surest way to put an end to this situation. Instead, we put our energy and money into a war without end, one that has only grown bigger and more problematic over time. I, for one, don't buy your fantasies that we can or should kill all of the terrorists. Are we next going to bomb Pakistan into oblivion? Saudi Arabia? Iran? And if you think not, then why not? Pakistan was and maybe still is selling nuclear technology to the Third World. You talk about how Iraq will be a staging ground for terrorists if we leave. Whose fault is that? Did Saddam allow terrorists to use Iraq as a base? Absolutely not! We made a huge mistake, so let’s not make it worse at this point. When you are in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. Also, if you really believe your own postings, then why the heck aren't you over in Iraq fighting for the world’s freedom? If the administration really believes in this war, why haven't we instituted a draft and taken this thing seriously? Follow the money trail, Vance, and you will get it right every time. You have swallowed this bs hook, line, and sinker. Not all of us have.
