Dear Editor, In your Dec. 15 issue [“Point Austin,” News] we learned the following fun fact: "To satisfy Wall Street investors ... Wal-Mart must add eight percent of floor space internationally every year – that's now roughly 65 million square feet a year." Using these numbers and some simple math, one can calculate that our friends' current worldwide footprint is 812 million square feet, or just under 30 square miles. According to my atlas, the Earth has roughly 57 million square miles of land. If Wal-Mart continues to meet their doughty goal of 8% growth, we can look forward to a day in 2194 when all the land on Earth will be covered by their super-duper-centers. Good luck finding parking.
