What's Wrong With Teaching Intelligent Design and Evolution?

RECEIVED Tue., Oct. 18, 2005

Dear Editor,
I might be too stoned to get it, but what's the big deal among liberals about intelligent design? And what's the big deal to right-wing fundamentalists about evolution? There's no conflict of interest at all in teaching the two, since one, ID, addresses the origins of life on Earth, and the other, evolution, addresses what has taken place since life came to exist on planet Earth. Where's the conflict? It's fun to watch and once again see that extremists are the same, no matter what party they cling to the fringes of. Right-wing fundamentalists think teaching evolution is wrong and terrible, and left-wing liberals think having a class to discuss the origins of life on Earth or in the universe is a bad thing, a horror. All it shows is how both groups are the same bunch of clowns, just with different-colored noses. Relax, let the kids learn different ideas from different perspectives, let their minds wonder and wander about how life came to be, not just on Earth, but at all. Think of all the possibilities that are not even based on religion. I thought being exposed to diverse views was supposed to be a good thing, I thought it led to "more better rounded people"? Well, I gotta run. The cow that some event created and which I consumed has evolved into fertilizer, which I must return to nature. Chill out, both sides, or the rational people will send you to your rooms.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
