Republican Labeling

RECEIVED Mon., Oct. 18, 2004

Dear Editor,
The White House deems the National Education Association a "terrorist organization."
The NEA Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C., voted overwhelmingly to recommend John Kerry for president. They say the future of education, social security, and Medicare hang in the balance in this election.
If you watched the last debate you heard Bush crowing at least three times about his No Child Left Behind bill. The truth is Bush squandered funds for this and other critical social programs by giving huge tax breaks to the rich and underfunded NCLB by billions of dollars.
When the NEA challenged Bush to fix and fund NCLB, he did what Republicans do best. He sent over the secretary of education, Ron Paige, who labeled the NEA a "terrorist organization" to their faces!
Page could have, at least, used one of the Republicans' lesser labels to discredit the NEA, like "un-American" or "unpatriotic" or "liberal" or "traitors."
