Honor Others' Free Speech; You Just Might Agree

RECEIVED Mon., Oct. 18, 2004

Dear Editor,
At a stoplight, while driving down South Lamar Saturday afternoon, my sister noticed a bicyclist lingering behind her truck. She thought the bicyclist, a female, was looking oddly at her bumper, but when the light changed she just drove on. But when she got to my house, she realized that her yellow ribbon "Support Our Troops" bumper magnet was gone. Obviously, the girl had stolen it.
Now, the only reason that she might have taken it, that we can figure, is that the girl equated the "Support Our Troops" magnet with a pro-Bush sticker. I'm sorry, but the world is not that black and white.
My sister happens to have served in Iraq (she got back after a year's service this past May), and while she is proud to have served her country, she is not pro-Bush. I am writing to inform this person, and anyone else on either the right or left, that you can support the men and women who fulfill their duty to serve and still disagree with the government that sends them off to risk their lives.
Thank goodness my sister has a great sense of humor. She also visited the Two Unemployed Democrats gift store Friday night and bought a lot of anti-Bush items during her Austin visit, including a yard sign.
Sincerely,
Ms. Tonatzin Barragan
