Children's Health Care Should Be State Priority

RECEIVED Mon., Aug. 16, 2004

Dear Editor,
The governor and the legislators, if they read any newspapers, must feel the dissent from the majority of Texans over their handling of the Children's Health Insurance Plan.
The evil schemes, used to reduce the enrollment, make me sick. Passing up the federal contribution with an apparent 357% return on investment is plainly stupid!
Is the urge to keep elected office so great and profitable that they can't afford to lose a vote by raising taxes to pay for essential services? Their main priority should not be to please their stingy and uncaring backers and donors by not raising taxes.
They all should be pushing for a reasonable state income tax to maintain health care for children and education at all levels. This is our future. They should try to think beyond the next election! Texas should have the No. 1 rating in both areas.
Please give Texans something to be proud of!
Sincerely,
Gene Thomas
