Nader Had a Major Impact on 2000 Race

RECEIVED Mon., March 1, 2004

Dear Editor,
I don't necessarily disagree with all that you stated in your article ["Blaming It on Ralph, Again," News, Feb. 27]. After all, I was one of the independents who voted for Nader in 2000. And the Democrats have done a great job of wimping out the last three years.
Now they seem to be developing a backbone, but that's another story to be told at a later time.
You must admit Nader had a major impact on the presidential race that year. He got 93,000 or so votes in Florida, correct? The race was decided with only about 530 votes.
How many Republicans voted for Nader in Florida? More than 47,000 Republicans and independents would have had to do this, and that's assuming the independents would have otherwise voted for Gore, and since Nader is generally considered left-wing by most Republicans, I seriously doubt he had much of a following there.
Or is it that you think Nader has a Republican following? I don't know. You may be right. My mother likes Nader, and she's a Republican. But then she voted for Bush even though she doesn't like him.
Go figure. Anyway, enjoyed your commentary. Thanks.
