New Hampshire Is Not Vermont

RECEIVED Fri., Feb. 13, 2004

Dear Chronicle:

I loved the Ventura piece about presidential chops and wannabe choppers ["Letters @ 3am," Feb. 6]. One glaring error, though: Mr. Ventura writes that Howard Dean was governor of New Hampshire. I live in eastern, upstate New York, 45 minutes from the Vermont border, the great and beautiful green mountain state, of which Howard Dean was chief executive. Vermont, Michael – home of the civil union, Ben and Jerry's, and the country's only socialist congressman, the redoubtable Bernie Sanders of Burlington. New Hampshire, known around here as the "other" Vermont, is a nice state, but, as was proved by its primary result, does not by a long shot consider Howard Dean a favorite son.
