There are two facts that may have escaped a lot of public attention recently. First, portions of Patriot Act 2 were signed into law on Dec. 13, the same day Hussein was captured. These parts of the unpopular legislation were riders on HR 2417. The news release is available on www.whitehouse.gov. Second, a leading Green Party member, Doug Stuber, was blacklisted from air travel in January 2003. The reason? It seems the Green Party is listed as a terrorist organization by the Justice Department (www.alternet.org, Jan. 6). Combine these two tasty news tidbits, and you get: The ability for warrantless, unsupervised surveillance of an opposing political party by law enforcement, under the direction of the incumbent administration. You get a lawful (but still unethical) Watergate scenario. Got your passports in order?
