With three-quarters of a million Americans arrested on cannabis charges last year, it seems glaringly apparent that the media campaigns of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Partnership for a Drug Free America are failing to meet their goal of discouraging marijuana use. Instead of sensible approaches to drug use, such as education, truth, honesty, and accurate information, the taxpayers are being routinely fed false stories of cannabis dangers in the name of protecting the children. If children are to be responsibly protected, parents must acknowledge that there are dangers and consequences of marijuana use, as well as appropriate circumstances and potential benefits of its medical use. Perhaps the money spent on incarceration of nonviolent cannabis offenders would be better spent on education and treatment programs.
