Recording for Blind & Dyslexic

RECEIVED Thu., Oct. 2, 2003

Dear editor,
For more than 31 years, the Texas Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, a national nonprofit organization, has been opening doors of opportunity by providing recorded textbooks for students with disabilities that make reading challenging or impossible. Now, thanks to a grant to RFB&D from the U.S. Department of Education, the Austin Independent School District will partner with the Texas unit to provide recorded textbook and learning strategies for as many as 200 local students with disabilities such as dyslexia.
The grant enables RFB&D to provide AISD schools with 10 comprehensive packages of RFB&D's Learning Through Listening products and services, including access to a library of recorded textbooks in use in the district and training for teachers who will incorporate this unique accommodation into classroom instruction. The value of the package provided to AISD schools is $8,670.
Thanks to the recent introduction of RFB&D's AudioPlus digitally recorded textbooks on CD, learning through listening is even more effective for students who struggle with the printed page. RFB&D's AudioPlus textbooks allow for bookmarking and navigation by page, chapter, and section headings. These portable CD textbooks can be used with stand-alone players or with specialized software on multimedia PCs.
In addition to forward-thinking educators, school administrators, and parents, students in our community who benefit from RFB&D's Learning Through Listening programs have many neighbors to thank for creating textbooks in fully accessible formats. All through the spring and summer months, 244 volunteers at RFB&D's Austin-based recording studio were busy preparing for the new school year by recording new titles and updated editions to add to RFB&D's unique collection of 93,000 textbooks on CD and cassette tape. RFB&D's master library of recorded textbooks contains titles covering every grade level and subject area from the latest Harry Potter book to Mathematical Proofs: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics.
