Blame the Democrats Not the Naderites!

RECEIVED Tue., Aug. 19, 2003

Dear Chronicle:
Mr. Black, Mr. Ventura, and other Nader bashers focus on the election of 2000 as the reason why we are closer to a totalitarian state. But they overlook the fact that we are there primarily because of the acquiesence of Democrats prior to 2000 and after.
Only one Democrat out of 50 voted against the PATRIOT Act – with its secret trials and secret detentions. The confirmations of justices Scalia and Thomas passed through Democratic senates. Scalia's was unanimous!
Only in the past year have Democrats been resisting the Bush and Perry administrations with any consistency. God bless them. But the resistence of Democrats to the Republican agenda wasn't all that evident in 2000. Gore is a lot more Nader-like now. I am trying to work with the Democrats.
