A Year With Frog and Toad
For generations of children, Arnold Lobel’s stories of amphibian best buds Frog and Toad have been a charming guide to the complexities and joys of friendship. Now the pair take to the stage for this delightful Tony-nominated musical. It’s truly a family affair, adapted by Lobel’s son-in-law Mark Linn-Baker with music by Robert Reale and book & lyrics by his brother, Willie. This new production, directed by Best of Austin winner Sara Burke, features Jillian Sainz and Victoria Brown donning the signature jackets and trousers of Frog and Toad, respectively. – Richard WhittakerFridays-Sundays. Singin’ in the Rain in the Park (1952)
What better spring musical is there than Singin’ in the Rain, a Hollywood Golden Age classic wherein Gene Kelly prances around in Technicolor and Cyd Charisse stunts on everyone (those gams!). With some of the best choreography and songs of all time, Hyperreal Film Club invites you to a “film history fairy tale about the death of silent film. Sometimes the journey is inspiring and joyful, and sometimes it is exhausting and exploitative … it’s both a monument to the movie musical’s past and a playful slap from its future.” The screening will follow an 8:30 music video premiere for Tele Novella’s “Eggs in One Basket.” – Lina FisherThu., April 25 -

Czech That Film Texas (2023)
Film fest Czech That Film Texas promotes contemporary cinema from Czech filmmakers that “not only expose viewers to Czech culture, but also enlighten audiences, bring people together, and present inspired entertainment for all.” This Tuesday’s kickoff film comes from directors Jan Vejnar & Tomáš Pavlíček and netted both Best Director and Actress at the Czech Oscars. She Came at Night, also called Přišla v noci, digs into the heart-pounding horror of a mother-in-law overstaying her visit to a young thirtysomething couple – featuring Simona Peková as the titular “she,” a 60-year-old diva who takes over her daughter and son-in-law’s lives. Esther's Follies
Esther's Follies – Austin's not-so-secret weapon in the fight against ennui – the comedy gem that still dazzles this growing urban hub – returns to the weekly live and in-person stage of their club on Dirty Sixth, the whole troupe bringing back old favorites and debuting a new program of hilarity with topical, ripped-from-the-headlines sketches and musical numbers. And you do need a laugh or two, right about this time, don't you, citizen? (And how about a margarita to go with that?)
